From South Georgia the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia hunters enjoy some of the best sporting locations in the country. While South Georgia can give you the feel of a Florida hunt it just isn’t as rough on us old folks as the Florida marsh and swamp areas. And North Georgia has some fantastic wildlife without the hassle of hiking for hours up the mountain like you find out west and further north. Most of the mountain land in North Georgia around Ellijay and Blue Ridge is accessible by jeep or 4×4 truck so you can spend more time tracking and setting up than you do hiking and lugging gear. If you are into the adventure including long hikes and camping Georgia has plenty of opportunity to do just that but at my age I like that it’s a choice.

November and December are firearms hunting seasons for South and North Georgia with slightly different dates for the end of October and the beginning of January. As hunters take to the woods they get a big dose of the American outdoors. Even if you aren’t a hunter you probably know one and I can almost guarantee you that he would be willing to introduce you to the sport, even if you don’t plan on firing a rifle. There is a lot more to hunting than the kill. I know some old timers that rarely pull the trigger any more but you will never stop them from enjoying the freedom, peace, camaraderie, the skill and sport of tracking, and the feast after the hunt.

The street dances will start at 8 PM and end at 11 PM both nights. The Little Mr. and Miss Festival pageant will be at 6 PM on Friday evening. Both Miss and Junior Miss Festival pageants will begin at 3 PM on Saturday. The parade will begin at 11 AM on Saturday morning.

The festival will take place on the historic square in downtown Adairsville and will be going on Friday and Saturday from 8 AM to 11 PM, Sunday from 12 Noon to 5 PM. Admission is $3 for everyone over 6 and is free on Sunday.

Live music will be played thoughout the day headlined by CMA and Grammy award nominee, country music artist John Berry. The kids will have fun with the activities planned for them and there will be plenty of food vendors available.

Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 the day of the event.  Children 10 and under are free. VIP packages are available. You can get your advance tickets or VIP packages online at southernvetsfest.org. All proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Northwest Georgia Homeless Veterans Foundation (NGHVF) and the Three Rivers Program of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH).

As part of the festival, you can Ride for the Homeless. The motorcycle ride leaves from Harley Davidson of Cartersville at 10:30 AM. The ride ends at the festival.
